   - about us -

Our Story

Our Congregation, the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Malta, was founded by a Dominican Tertiary, Miss Carolina Cauchi, in Gozo in the year 1889.  Originally, Miss Carolina Cauchi and her cousin, Miss Fortunata Spiteri, wanted to start a Cloistered Monastery, but the first group of six members, inspired by the urgent need of the time,
dedicated themselves to nursing and teaching.

Community

We live in a community, following the example of the primitive Christians: “The multitude of believers had but one heart and one soul” (Acts4:32).

Ministry/Charism

Our apostolate consists of bearing witness of our lives consecrated to God and proclaiming Christ.  The four objectives of our Congregation are:

  1. The care of the frail and the aged
  2. Teaching and pastoral care
  3. Care of children and youth with problems
  4. Shelter for women and their kids with social problems.

Our Religious Habit

We wear a religious habit as a sign of our consecration.  Our religious habit consists of a white tunic, a white scapular and a black veil.  While performing our apostolate we wear a simple white dress and a white veil.  When a sister makes her final profession she wears a golden ring with a crucifix, as a sign of intimate union with Jesus Christ.

Prayer

Our Constitution obliges us to celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours in the morning and in the evening.  This is said in common.  Our sisters follow the example set by St. Dominic, who was always composed in prayer and in contemplating the Word of God.  St. Dominic promulgated the Rosary – a good protecting shield against all evil.

He also introduced the Nine Ways of Prayer:
